About ThinkRail
ThinkRail is an agentic IDE built around the pi coding agent, providing isolated git-worktree workspaces, a real editor, terminals, and concurrent agent chats for software development.
ThinkRail is an agentic Integrated Development Environment (IDE) designed to enhance the developer experience by integrating an AI coding agent, 'pi', directly into the workflow. It allows users to open any local Git repository as a project and create isolated Git worktree workspaces. Each workspace functions as its own branch with dedicated files, terminals, and chat sessions, ensuring that parallel development efforts remain clean and independent from the main branch.
The IDE provides a comprehensive development environment, featuring Monaco editor tabs (the VS Code editor engine) for syntax highlighting and markdown rendering, a files tree for active worktree visibility, and a live Git diff to review agent-generated changes. Developers can run tests in real PTYs scoped to their worktree while the agent continues its work, fostering a collaborative coding environment.
ThinkRail's agent chat functionality supports multiple concurrent sessions per workspace, allowing users to select different models and monitor token usage and cost in real-time. The agent can ask structured questions within the chat, enabling interactive problem-solving. A core principle of ThinkRail is its "spec-first" approach, where a connected graph of spec files lives alongside the code, which the agent reads, searches, and maintains using dedicated tools, ensuring that project intent is preserved across sessions.
Developed as an open-source project under the Apache-2.0 license and supported by JetBrains InnovationHub, ThinkRail is available for macOS (Apple Silicon), Windows (x64), and Linux (Ubuntu 24.04+ x64 and ARM64). It can be installed via local launchers that open a browser-based UI, offering flexibility in deployment and access.
