About Flostep
Flostep is a system design tool that allows users to sketch, walk through, and share system design flows by dragging components, connecting them, and presenting each interaction step by step.
Flostep provides a canvas for users to build interactive system design diagrams. Users can drag and drop components such as Frontend, Service, Database, Cache, Queue, and External API, or create custom ones. Interactions between components are connected with arrows and labeled, allowing for a detailed representation of system flows.
The core functionality of Flostep is its step-through walkthrough feature. Users can hit 'Next' to navigate through each interaction one at a time, with the active step highlighted. This is designed for use cases like design reviews, onboarding new team members, and system design interviews, offering a dynamic alternative to static diagrams.
Flostep supports various features to enhance collaboration and documentation, including code-to-diagram import for converting text-based flow descriptions, comments on shared links for async feedback, and shareable public links that allow anyone to interact with the diagram without an account. Diagrams can also be embedded as interactive iframes into platforms like Notion, Confluence, or blogs.
The platform integrates with AI assistants through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), enabling tools like Claude, Cursor, VS Code, and Windsurf to generate, read, and edit diagrams based on natural language descriptions or existing codebases. This allows for automated diagram creation and modification, streamlining the design process.
Flostep includes a dedicated notes panel for capturing context, trade-offs, and open questions alongside diagrams, ensuring that all relevant information is saved together. All changes are auto-saved to the cloud, providing continuous access and version control from any device.
